Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Feb 2 1980, The Stone....for "Gersh"

I wanted to share with you all a quick thought on serendipity.

Around 1985, I was given a live recording of Jerry Garcia on cassette tape. I quickly went over to Eric's house to "dub" it for him, but tradgedy struck.... I spilled my drink on it before we could record a copy!! Back then, tapes were very hard to come by in Surfside SC, so we set about disassembling the tape in his bedroom and cutting off the contaminated section. Dispite losing quite a bit of the show, what remained was one of our favorite tapes (we only had a few in the begining).

Eric and I eventually drifted apart as our lives progressed, but I would occasionally hear updates on him and vise versa. And I never quit looking for the tape. After many years of frustration I finaly realized that the tape had been woefully mislabeled, and everything was wrong, the date, place, etc.

Flash forward to this Feb. where I received some music via the internet. The recording was from an unknown source, but the date fell roughly where I suspected the concert took place. I put it on stereo, and went into the kitchen to cook. After a few minutes I shrugged off the fact that once again I had the wrong recording. But then, all of a sudden, it WAS the tape! I actually got goose bumps standing there in the kitchen recalling the music almost note for note after oh so many years. What I realized was the reason I didnt recognize the tape was because Eric and I cut it out many years ago. I stood there in my kitchen thinking about Eric and where he might be, somehow I had to let him know "I found it!"

Two weeks later, the man who recorded that concert released his private copy to the world. It turned out to be Bob Menke. After 30 years, he releases his copy, previously uncredited. It was that same week that a mutual friend Shawn told me that he had found Eric in Ohio and would I want his number?

I spoke to Eric on Monday, April 5th for the first time in 20 years. It was so good to hear his voice again! We laughed and chatted for a while, and I told him the story of how fate had put him in my thoughts many times recently. He totally remembered the tape and the whole "tape surgery" incident. I promised to send him a copy. We were both stoked about the music.

He passed away that night.

Despite the shock and grief, I know I was given a wonderful opportunity to speak with Eric one last time. For some reason, the Gods worked me into his life at the last moment. For that I will forever be grateful.

Download the Jerry Garcia Band, Feb 2, 1980 at The Stone in San Fran CA from Bob Menke. Listen to it. Think of Eric. In my mind it will forever be his show. I know he loved it.

I want to thank all of you who are participating in the live music community. My life is so much richer for the experience. I hope yours is too...

Great story, very sad about your friend passing away.

Where is the DL located, if I may ask?

I did a quick search on the archive and found this

thanks very much for sharing your experience, and sorry to hear of your friend; but what a show to reminisce over in his final hours! a stunning 2nd set, but the whole show just delivers; in honor of your friend, i've been listening to the Angus-Hart recording, which is fantastic by the way, altho i'm sure the Menke recording is equally enjoyable; cheers

Angus Hart??? I dont know of it...took me 25 years to find Menke's. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me someone repeatedly says "thank you" at the the end of the After Midnight! I swore my memory had someone doing that, but I didnt hear it on the Menke tape. If it does, then I know Im not crazy!!!!

Eric would be so proud. Thanks to all who have shared this with me!!

hmmm, i do not hear any repeated "thank you" on the Angus-Hart recording, but there is also a SBD of the 2nd set in circulation, as well as a recording by Eldon Porray, and a couple of "unknown" audience recordings, which might very well be older undocumented transfers of the known recordings, hard to say really without listening ... i do have the SBD & Porray sources (somewhere), if i hear anything along the lines of what you recall on those, i'll post here again

Bill, thx for sharing your story!

At a time when I've been questioning some important relationships in my life and my commitment to the "reality behind the scene"; that which makes life worth livin', this story reaffirmed my belief that there is more that ties us together then coincidence but a rather a true synchronicity we can only be sure of After Death.

Eric knows for sure now!

I know I don't know but stories like this give me a better idea!!! and my own experiences become stronger because we share here.

Wow. I just downloaded this last week, but haven't listened to it yet. I've had Garcia Plays Dylan on the iPod for a while, and the Masterpiece is just so good. I had to get the full 1980-02-02, one of the few remaining 1980 tapes I don't have (Dead or Jerry).

Thoughts and prayers for Eric, thanks for this wonderful post, and thanks to Bob Menke for the tape.

Thank you for your kind words. The only thing we managed to salvage was the After>Rigby>After, so we used it endlessly as a filler. I personally think its the best performance of any of them, way way better that the March 1980 version (official release)
